Review: ‘We Bought a Zoo’

20th Century Fox
Director: Cameron Crowe
Who's in it: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning
What's it about: Inspired by the amazing true story about a recently single dad (Damon) who dreams up the coolest, most unusual gift a parent could ever give his family: a zoo. Together with his kids, he travels from the city to their new home in the wilds of upstate New York where -- through the restoration of their ramshackle zoo -- the family reconnects and gets a fresh start.
Why we like it: Everyone puts in an earnest performance, making you look past the craziness of buying a zoo and into the family's yearning to be okay again after losing someone special. The comedic moments are timed perfectly without taking away from the family drama. Plus, you get Scarlett Johansson as your zookeeper - quite a good deal, eh!
Why we don't: It's a little cheesy when the characters say things like, "I like the animals but I love the humans" (nobody talks like that in real life!). Would've loved to see more animals, too.
Verdict: A sweet movie that's perfect for the holiday season, give it a go and leave the cinema feeling all happy and warm inside.
