Malaysia’s hip hop darling brings her sound to Australia, plus chats with us about ‘Summer Burning’, Korean pop, Teh Tarik Crew and married life with Noh Salleh.

To say Mizz Nina is going places is quite an understatement. When we caught up with the singer, she had just gotten back from Bandung and Boracay after filming a top-secret reality TV show with husband Noh Salleh of Hujan.
She wouldn’t say much, but she did tell us excitedly, “It would be great to have a reality show!”
Hint hint, TV stations, get on it!
The 32-year-old also whipped up a storm with her ‘Takeover’ album launch in Australia this past weekend. Held at one of Melbourne’s premier club nights, 'Love Saturdays' at Love Machine, Mizz Nina performed hits from her ‘Takeover’ album in front of a full house. No doubt the catchy line ‘hey sexy girl from Kuala la la Lumpur’ moved all of her Malaysian fan base there.
Adding to an already impressive resume that includes performing in front of 16,000 fans at MTV World Stage and sharing the stage with Justin Bieber, KARA and Jay Park, Mizz Nina continues her reign of the Malaysian hip hop scene, albeit this time with a more pop-dance sound.
Having already worked with Flo Rida, Colby O’Donis and Theo Martins, Mizz Nina has called on Black Eyed Peas DJ and famed produced DJ Poet for her next single ‘Summer Burning’. The infectious hit has already been making its rounds on radio airwaves and is available for purchase on iTunes.
Mizz Nina is no stranger when it comes to pushing boundaries in the Malaysian music scene; back in the late 1990s she was part of the AIM-nominated Teh Tarik Crew and as a pioneer in the local hip hop scene, she’s quick to tell you that it’s not as easy as you think.
“Being a female in a male dominated industry, it’s not easy. People will always judge you and you always have to prove yourself, but it’s challenging and it’s good.”
Just because she hung out with the boys doesn’t mean they treated her like a princess; Mizz Nina added, “Back then, I was a lot more tomboy-ish, I was fiercely independent. I constantly challenged myself so my rhymes and delivery, performance, showmanship was as good as the boys.”
So can we expect a Teh Tarik Crew reunion? Mizz Nina says, “I’m okay with it, but we just have to find the right event, the right gig.”
