In 1939, Clark Gable was nominated for Best Actor for his classic performance in Gone with the Wind, but lost out to Robert Donat for the rather less groundbreaking Goodbye, Mr Chips (the original 1939 version, as opposed to the 1969 version, which O'Toole was nominated for but failed to win).

And we all know what Rhett Butler would say to that.

He had, however, already won a Best Actor Oscar for his 1934 turn in It Happened One Night, so it's not all doom and gloom for the original matinee idol.
