Eight-time Academy Award-nominated actor Peter O'Toole has retired from acting, but he's not the only star unlucky not to take home an Oscar.
Peter O'Toole, the legendary star of Lawrence of Arabia and Goodbye Mr Chips, has announced his retirement from acting at the grand old age of 79.
The Irish-born actor said in a statement: "It is time for me to chuck in the sponge... to retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me - it won't come back."
Sadly for O'Toole, and despite a glittering career which saw him showered with honours and critical acclaim, he never received the ultimate accolade of an Academy Award, despite being nominated eight times. He goes down as the most nominated actor never to be honoured by the Academy (apart from his 2003 Academy Honorary Award), but he's far from the only star who should feel aggrieved at not having an Oscar on their mantelpiece.
