Sonny Bono joined the church after a discussion with Mimi Rogers, Tom Cruise's first wife. He described himself as Catholic throughout his life, but retained strong Scientology links throughout. When L Ron Hubbard, the religion's founder, died in 1986, Sonny paid for a full-page newspaper ad which read: "My only sorrow is that L Ron Hubbard left before I could thank him for my new life."
