Chaw surrendered himself to the Hong Kong police after the authorities revealed that they were investigating the case. After having his statement recorded, the 30-year-old singer from Sabah was charged with common assault and was later released on bail, pending further investigation. If convicted, Chaw faces a one-year jail sentence.

On September 23, 2009, Chaw was captured on video in a street brawl with popular Hong Kong singer Justin Lo. The pair reportedly met up for drinks at a bar before they got into a heated argument and began trading punches outside the bar.

After the incident was highlighted by the media, both Chaw and Lo issued public apologies to each other and Chaw has reportedly returned to Malaysia for a short break.

The fight has been a big blow to Chaw's promising singing career. The singer's concerts and music programmes in Hong Kong have been cancelled and it has also been reported that Chaw's RM18.4 million recording contract is in jeopardy.
